A vibrant community for writers.

The magic of CRAFT SCHOOL

WRITING EXERCISES

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

SMALL GROUPS

Our bustling course space offers one-of-a-kind weekly exercises directly related to our close reads, so core faculty get to know your writing style, including your topics and the tone, texture and shape of your works-in-progress. This is where we learn your unique voice and your brightest vision.

OFFICE HOURS

Every single week, core faculty members hold office hours, offering time and place for direct questions about your work in progress, and are equipped to answer those questions based not only on their own knowledge, but on direct experience with your writing in the course platform.

Every member of CRAFT SCHOOL is invited to be a member of a small group of writers working intimately together in the same genre and/or toward similar writing goals, with ongoing peer feedback being a crucial component for those who seek it.

What makes Craft School Different?

Embodied & Cross-Disciplinary Integration

Life-Oriented & Trauma-Informed

Community as Practice, Not Just Support

Deep Structure & Progression

Small Working Groups & Peer Support

Seasonal Themed Postal Exchanges

Few writing programs integrate CRAFT SCHOOL’s embodied and cross-disciplinary practices such as candlelight meditations, yoga nidra sessions, and breathwork on Zoom led by  trained teachers. Writing is rooted in our unique embodiments, and CRAFT SCHOOL reflects this. Additionally, writing exists in the context of the arts as a whole, and, therefore, we will  welcome dancers, painters, musicians, sociologists, and others to converse about how writing intersects with other disciplines and the way we live our lives.

Unlike MFA-style programs, CRAFT SCHOOL embraces trauma-informed pedagogy for approaching difficult material with less risk of re-traumatization. CRAFT SCHOOL is a place for discussing writing as a practice intertwined with daily life actions that deepen curiosity and attention, such as poetry walks, list-making, ethical eavesdropping, etc. We teach craft as a healing force, including how to shape stories in ways that are powerful for readers & safe for writers.

Many programs emphasize “supportive community.” CRAFT SCHOOL goes further with ritualized communal practices that tether us to our work and each other, like regular free-writes and open-mic salons, themed Mighty Network exchanges, digital campfires, collaborative writing experiments, etc. And through our community-led workshops, you’ll also have opportunities to share your passions and areas of expertise.

Many programs are loosely strung-together workshops. In contrast, CRAFT SCHOOL offers a whole-group, unifying monthly close read that creates a collective arc across the year, offering members a cumulative journey, a shared vocabulary, and a deep, collective study of craft.

Within the larger group give all interested participants a space to discuss their individual writing and to offer trusted and skillful, craft-focused feedback to others. We’ll also pair interested writers with partners for increased accountability and, over time, the possibility of trusted readers for exchanging pages.

In our increasingly digital world, things we touch with our hands matter and hold meaning. Our postal exchanges involve letters, fragments, and artifacts mailed across the world.
